Jewelry Making Kits for Beginners

A quick, personal note before I show you some options for jewelry making kits for beginners (especiaHomemade Braceletlly)…

It all started with a bracelet… actually, the very same bracelet I’m showing you here in this photo to the right.

One of my sisters in law made me a really pretty bracelet a few years ago, and I asked her how she did it. It turned out that she had recently developed an interest in the art and just went for it!

I just took a photo of it and have included it here. She worked the wire into an artistic twist, and made the setting to set this very interesting stone which is quite attractive. She really has a talent for it!

This was one of her earlier attempts, and I’m proud and honored that she would have given this to me!

I’m also very fond of looking at the absolutely gorgeous earrings and other jewelry that people make and sell at craft fairs. The creativity and joy these artisans take in their work is inspirational! You can almost FEEL the love they have for their creations!

And they always say, “If I can do this, anyone can!” So… let’s get started!

Jewelry Making Kits for Beginners

Making jewelry can easily become one of those “hobbies gone awry” in that once you try it, you can easily get hooked! And, if you think you just might want to try it, but aren’t sure where to begin, then you are in the right place! Like with every other craft or hobby, everyone has to start somewhere – at the beginning! We have selected a number of beginner-level kits for beginners here – but don’t think for a minute that people just starting out can’t turn out some absolutely lovely jewelry!

As you scroll down, you’ll see some gorgeous designs, basic jewelry making tools and supplies, and a couple of instructional videos to familliarize yourself with some of the basics of what you’ll need. We’ve also found some cute jewelry and bead kits for girls, a nice Swarovski necklace kit, and more!

Also, once you become more proficient, you might even be able to earn some money with your hobby (think “Etsy” and local craft shows) – and I see TONS of gorgeous pieces that are sold at several local farmer’s markets where I live both in the summer and winter – so it doesn’t seem to be a regional thing. Let’s continue!

Jewelry Making Kits for Adults – Yes, there IS a difference!

A lot of the beginner jewelry making kits for adults will contain very small piece that could obviously pose a choking hazard for little kids. So, you’ll definitely want to keep an eye open if you have little ones nearby while you’re trying to work.

These particular kits have detailed instructions. Whether you are buying a kit for yourself or as a gift, we’ve got you covered! And don’t worry! I’ve got a few kits coming up for the younger girls!

Jewelry Basics Class In A Box Kit, Naturals Glass by Jewelry BasicsTHIS one, Jewelry Basics Class In A Box Kit, Naturals Glass, by the company Jewelry Basics gets pretty high marks all around! One slight issue seems to be that the cutters/pliers are not real heavy-duty.

In my own case, I’m a little rough on tools, so this is something that I wanted to point out. Of course, it’s easy enough to remedy with a separate set of tools – but, if you are JUST starting out, give it a try before you invest in more tools. Just click the image to head over to Amazon to check this one out.

Jewelry Basics Class In A Box Kit- Bright Glass by Jewelry BasicsOkay, here’s another one that is also getting good reviews, and has some questions & answers for you in the listing: Jewelry Basics Class In A Box Kit, Bright Glass, also by Jewelry Basics. This particular set is getting high marks all around – but these are pretty much coming in from verified buyers – and that’s important to me, so I would imagine that’s important to you as well.

AND, like its sister product above, the price is right! On sale for only about $18.59 with free shipping (at the time of this post) – so this is a good choice. Now, it’s not necessarily for “Adults” but because these do have tiny eenie weenie parts that could be a choking hazard to little kids, so I’m careful with that. To buy or look at this kit, just click the image to go right to the Amazon listing.

One person said it’s find for ages 8-12, and another didn’t particularly care for the beads themselves, but here at MyFavDeals.org, we have lots of other resources for you if you want to buy beads REALLY inexpensively.

Check out our “Craft” and “Hobbies” and other similar categories to see what companies are offering specials and coupon codes for huge savings:

So, those are a couple of the kits for just about anyone, but certainly for beginners.

Another Personal Item: This is one of my FAVORITE Handmade Necklaces

Coral and Turquoise Necklace that I've had for yearsI’ve had this for years… this necklace is coral and turquoise, and I’ve had it for probably 25 years. It’s the one necklace that reminds me of one of my favorite types of vacations – the beach!

I have walked miles on beaches wearing this necklace. It is handmade by a woman I met in Hawaii, and while I know it’s not the fanciest necklace, it is one of my favorites.

Perhaps it has something to do with the memories. Typically, nothing that I buy for myself really has any sentimental value, and I wind up giving stuff to my husband to sell on eBay – but this little necklace is an exception to the rule. 🙂

Let’s move on to some jewelry making kits for girls – Suitable for young girls and tweens.

If you think your young lady might enjoy bead or jewelry making kits for girls, you’re not alone. As we’ve already mentioned, jewelry making is a lot of fun, and girls everywhere love to spend time making gifts for one another.

These kits are easy on your wallet, but will provide a terrific “rainy day” or “sleepover” activity. Or, you can have a “jewelry making party” theme as well – and the girls can all take what they made home as party favors. Let your imagination go!

Please remember, that even though these are kits for kids, there will still be choking hazards. I’ve chosen products primarily for the 8-12 or 8-15 year old, and for the 7 – 10 year old here.

ALEX Toys Do-it-Yourself Wear Friends 4 Ever Jewelry kit for girlsThis kit is really awesome, and don’t just take my word for it – check out the nearly 470 reviews, giving this kit a solid 4.5+ rating! This is the ALEX Toys Do-it-Yourself Wear Friends 4 Ever Jewelry, by ALEX Toys. Girls 8-12 will like this one!

It has a neat little wheel that helps with the weaving. Nice one! It reminds me a little of the weaving looms of my youth… To buy or look at this one, again, you can click the image to go right to its Amazon listing, or click here.

Fashion Angels Jewelry Design Super Set by Fashion Angels - Project RunwayThere are 2 other jewelry making kits for girls that caught my eye, and seem to be in stock most of the time. This next one is the Fashion Angels Jewelry Design Super Set, by Fashion Angels, Project Runway.

This is for girls 8-15 years old. Nice set with a tidy carrying case for the beads and findings. Again, you want to be sure you keep an eye open if you have younger children in the area since there may be a choking hazard. And, again, just click on the picture to head over to the Amazon listing.

ALEX Toys Do-it-Yourself Wear Cap It Off JewelryThe last kit for little girls that I came across that seemed pretty cool is the ALEX Toys Do-it-Yourself Wear Cap It Off Jewelry, by ALEX Toys. It actually surprised me that this would be popular since I thought bottle caps were a thing of the past, but some old friends seem to stay with us!

I almost didn’t include this one because it doesn’t have many reviews (and not a lot of “verified buyer” ones at that), but the “verified” reviews (meaning someone actually purchased the product) were good, so I included it, plus the price is right at under $20. It’s for kids about ages about 7 – 10. I do have to confess that this was a new one to me!

Jewelry Making Tool Kits

As with any hobby or craft, there are a few tools and supplies that you will need. In this case, jewelry making tool kits might be just the thing to fit the bill. You don’t need to spend a lot, either! You probably already know that you’ll need a few pliers and crimping tools, so I’ve found a number of nice ones that won’t break the bank!

Also, there are a few other tools that you might find helpful as you learn!

If you are REALLY new to jewelry making, you may want to just start with one of the kits that we discussed earlier to see if you really like the craft before going out and buying more tools – but if you think you have enough interest, then one of these kits will probably do the trick. Enjoy!

Let’s take a moment to watch this video, where the narrator recommends a number of beginning jewelry making tools and supplies that will help you get started quickly. Then, below, I’ve gathered a few tool kits, also on Amazon, for you to take a look at.

Now that you’ve seen a few things that will come in handy, here are a couple of starter tool kits for you!

Beadalon 7-Piece Tool Kit Zip Pouch, EconoThis little kit is the Beadalon 7-Piece Tool Kit Zip Pouch, Economy version, by Beadalon.
This is the #1 best seller on Amazon in the jewelry-making category! And, with over 580 reviews, all solidly giving this kit a 4.5+ rating, it looks like a good way to get started. Buyers are saying that this one is good for travel.

One buyer did state that the cutters aren’t the highest quality (dulling quickly). So that is something to keep in mind. Now, remember, we’re concentrating on jewelry making kits for BEGINNERS primarily, so sure – there are more expensive tool kits, but if you’re just starting out, why spend $50 or more when $20 or so will do? Yes, that was my thought exactly! 🙂

This one from Kerro Outlets also gets high grades, although from only about 86 customers – some “verified,” and others not, but I liked the looks of it. This is called the Jewelry Making Tools Kit From Kerro Outlets. It has a bonus Jewelry Pouch included, and includes 12 quality jewelry making tools in a zippered case. It measures (according to the listing) 4 1/2 inches by 6 inches, and they are marketing it to adults wanting to make their own jewelry. So, that’s exactly what we’re looking for here!

Jewelry Making Tools Kit From Kerro Outlets - BONUS Jewelry Pouch Now Included - Includes 12 Quality Jewelry Making Tools In a Zippered CaseHere’s what it comes with (I just took this from their listing):
– 3 Piece Pliers Set (Chain Nose Pliers, Flush Cutters Pliers, Round nose Pliers)
– 1 Hook
– 1 Thread Cutter
– 2 Needles
– 2 Tweezers
– 1 Knife
– 1 Awl
– 1 Thimble

Now, this is a little more expensive than the Beadalon mentioned above – but still under $30. With Amazon, some deals include free shipping if you’re an Amazon Prime Member, and other times, if you spend over $35 (and are NOT a Prime member), you can qualify for Free Shipping. This is one of those deals. So, if you have a couple of other things you want to shop for at Amazon, this might be a good thing to bundle into your cart.

As is the case with our other Amazon listings, simply click the photo image to be taken right to the listing.

OOOH! UPDATE! For those of you who are interested in a home based jewelry business, we found a great course called “Jewelry Selling Secrets” by Kameron Kay! Here’s a quick video about it, and if you are interested, simply –>> CHECK IT OUT HERE! (Jewelry making kits continues below this video…)

Okay – there is only ONE MORE TOOL that I want to point out here, that I personally do not think I could work without. It’s the very popular (almost 1,000 outstanding reviews) Carson DeskBrite200 LED Lighted 2x Magnifier and Desk Lamp. As the listing points out, this isn’t just good for jewelry making, but for any hobby or craft work, definitely for reading, and just about anything else that requires up-close and personal type of work.

The lens itself is a nice acrylic, and the neck is flexible – which is definitely what you are going to need. Look, even if you have great eyesight, using this nice portable magnifier will make the smaller tasks much easier on your eyes. Plus, you need to keep both hands free, so again, this lightweight (just over one pound) table-top model is an excellent choice. You can run it on the electric power cord OR 3 AA batteries (which are not included).

(PS: It also helps me see more clearly for when I’m polishing my toes. 🙂 I’m guessing you didn’t need to know that… sorry! )

Click the photo to see the listing. Then, scroll below the photo for some books we found that might be helpful.

Books on Jewelry Making – Perfect gift for any aspiring jewelry maker!

While the jewelry making kits for beginners have instructions, it doesn’t hurt to consult with a few books on jewelry making as well. Personally, I prefer lots of photos (since I’m a very visual person), and these books have great pictures! Plus, you will find lots of step by step instructions – perfect for the beginner! So, dig in…learn, and most importantly, have fun!

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Jewelry Making and Beading (Teach Yourself VISUALLY Consumer): When I first looked at this book, I was instantly impressed by the organization – and, I love the word “artisan.” They will teach us to be artisans! 🙂 Oh… also, the fact that it’s loaded with pictures. I NEED PICTURES! And, over 230 excellent reviews too. (Click image to see it on Amazon)

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Jewelry Making and Beading

As I researched the books teaching jewelry, I found this very highly ranked book, Bead on a Wire: Making Handcrafted Wire and Beaded Jewelry (Paperback – July 26, 2005) by Sharilyn Miller. It’s easy to see why this book is the author’s favorite. You can feel her passion for the craft. She’s also evidently a natural teacher from what her fans are saying! This one’s a winner! 🙂 Clicking the image will bring you right to the Amazon page.

And to think… it all started with a hand-made bracelet. 🙂
